The self-guided tour gave us what we wanted to see - a concise history of the Ryman and some of the notable entertainers who have performed there. I was surprised the numbers of non-country/bluegrass performers that had been there! Next visit would definitely include a concert!
The Ryman is likely the finest concert venue in terms of both size and acoustics that we have experienced. Old Dominion was superb, and having an appearance by none other than Kenny Chesney did not hurt either!
My first visit to the Ryman was a resounding success. My flight was cancelled during the shutdown, so I had another night in town and decided to do that quintessential Nashville thing: a classic country show at the Ryman. It didn’t matter who was playing, but Clay Walker fit the bill perfectly and didn’t disappoint. He charmed the stars and hypnotized the moon, one of my favorite country tunes from my high school days. I may have gotten a little too excited for his cover of Purple Rain, but his family members and my pew-mates had my back. The Mother Church seemed to be speaking through him, and I felt more connected to my own mother who was the reason I was in town in the first place—to take her out to a tribute to Joni Mitchell show that my sister organized. Her dementia momentarily dissolved as she sang those lyrics straight from the heart. Walker’s struggle with MS, and the stroke suffered by Randy Travis, who was wheeled on stage for an epic cameo, pointed out a deeper connection to the experience: that frail bodies are no match for the power of music to soothe and ignite the soul. Clay Walker and his band were indeed on fire, not shy to state their desire to put on a show we would never forget. Well, congrats Clay and thank you Ryman, it was one helluva night for the memory book..
